30 Days of Indie Travel-Day 14…QUOTE

BootsnAll says: What’s your favorite quote about travel? Why does it stand out to you?

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home.”
James A. Michener

This quote is very simple and to the point but represents my most basic travelling values. It is a complete waste of time to travel somewhere and then elect not to participate in the local culture. By not eating what the locals eat or even doing something as simple as speaking to the locals, how can you fully experience a place? There are unique perspectives and local advice to be had, which can often be more interesting than anything you find in a guidebook. There can be no better travel advisor than someone who lives there and loves the place. They should be your first stop on the itinerary.

  1. I’ve always loved a quote of Aldous Huxley’s: ‘To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.’
